The Rainbow Park Observatory is in an urban city park facility that houses seven telescopes of various sizes ranging from a 25″ Obsession to a 10″ Meade LX200 SCT. It is operated by the Rio Rancho Astronomical Society in cooperation with the Rio Rancho Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department. The site includes a 60-foot diameter “outdoor planetarium” composed of 12 specially designed benches with an interactive sundial in the center.
Tour the facility and then hear a talk by Rio Rancho Astronomical Society’s Melanie Templet about how the observatory was constructed as a partnership between the local astronomy club, the city, and the community. Also find out how the site is used in programming developed with Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America, local schools, businesses, and media outlets. This session includes transportation to and from the site, and a lunch.
